The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural amphitheatre formed over 2 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed. Today, this 600-meter-deep caldera covers 260 square kilometers and supports one of the densest wildlife populations on Earth. The enclosed ecosystem creates a unique sanctuary where approximately 25,000 large mammals live in a natural "Eden."

About Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the centerpiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning 8,288 square kilometers. The crater itself measures 19 kilometers in diameter, 610 meters in depth, and covers an area of 260 square kilometers.

Unlike other wildlife areas where animals roam freely across vast distances, the crater's enclosed ecosystem creates a natural sanctuary. The walls rise 600 meters from the floor, creating a self-contained world where approximately 25,000 large mammals live year-round.

The crater floor offers some of the most concentrated wildlife viewing in Africa. With permanent water sources and diverse habitats including grasslands, forests, and Lake Magadi, animals thrive in this unique environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The crater is located in northern Tanzania, approximately 180 kilometers from Arusha (3-4 hour drive). Most safaris include transportation as part of the package.
Ngorongoro is excellent year-round. The dry season (June-October) offers easier wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. The wet season (November-May) brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds.
A half-day game drive (4-6 hours) on the crater floor is sufficient to see most wildlife. However, we recommend spending a night on the crater rim to enjoy early morning and late afternoon game drives.
While sightings can never be guaranteed, Ngorongoro offers some of the best chances in Africa to see all Big Five. The black rhino is the most elusive, but the crater hosts one of the last healthy populations.
