Day-by-Day Itinerary

Detailed breakdown of your journey

1

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Rongai Camp

Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure on the remote northern side near the Kenyan border. The Rongai Gate (2,000m) is far from the crowds, offering immediate wilderness immersion. The trail winds through pristine forest where you might spot wildlife including elephants, colobus monkeys, and forest birds. The vegetation is lush and tropical, with giant trees draped in moss. The gentle climb allows you to adjust to the mountain environment while enjoying the unique perspective of Kilimanjaro from the north. Arrive at Rongai Camp (2,600m) in the early afternoon. The evening brings spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak catching the last light.

Day 2: Rongai Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Today you leave the forest behind and enter the heath zone, where the vegetation transforms dramatically. Giant heather plants replace the trees, and the air becomes thinner and cooler. The trail climbs along a ridge with increasingly spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and the vast plains stretching to Kenya. Watch for sunbirds feeding on giant proteas and perhaps a Verreaux's eagle soaring above. The northern approach offers different scenery than the southern routes – more rugged and isolated. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) with stunning sunset views.

Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Hut

A crucial acclimatization day. The trail climbs to Mawenzi Hut (4,330m) on the slopes of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro's second highest summit. The climb through alpine desert offers dramatic views of both Kibo and Mawenzi. The vegetation is sparse but beautiful – hardy plants adapted to harsh conditions. At the hut, you'll have lunch with views that stretch to Kenya and Tanzania. The "climb high, sleep low" principle is essential here – descend back to Kikelewa for a comfortable evening. The extra day makes a significant difference in how your body handles altitude.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Kibo Camp

The trail leaves the heath zone behind and enters the stark alpine desert – a surreal landscape of volcanic rock and scree. The vegetation disappears completely as you climb higher, replaced by vast fields of dark rock with glaciers glittering above. The air grows noticeably thinner, and each step requires conscious effort. The approach to Kibo Camp (4,700m) offers dramatic views of the mountain's glaciers and the summit ridge. Arriving by early afternoon, you'll rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Watch the sunset paint the glaciers gold and pink.

Day 5: Summit Night: Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

Wake at midnight to hot tea and biscuits, then step into the cold, clear night. Headlamps create a snake of light winding up the mountain as climbers make their way toward the summit. The trail crosses a vast scree field before reaching Gilman's Point (5,681m). The altitude makes breathing deliberate – every step requires conscious effort. At Gilman's Point, many climbers stop, but you press on for the final 214 meters to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). As dawn breaks, watch the sun illuminate Kilimanjaro's glaciers and cast long shadows across the plains. The emotion of standing on the "Roof of Africa" is overwhelming. Descend to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Your final day on Kilimanjaro is a gentle descent through lush rainforest. The trail winds downward through giant trees draped with moss, the air thick with moisture and alive with birdsong. Colobus monkeys swing overhead as you reflect on your incredible journey. At Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate – proof of your achievement. The drive back to your hotel passes through coffee farms where children wave. Tonight, celebrate with your crew who became friends on this unforgettable journey from the remote northern approach.
