Tanzania's Big Five: Where and When to See Them

Lion

Ngorongoro Crater has the highest density of lions in Africa. Serengeti's central and northern regions also offer excellent lion sightings. Lions are most active during early morning and late afternoon game drives.

Leopard

The Serengeti's Seronera area is famous for leopard sightings. Look for them resting in sausage trees along the Seronera River. Ngorongoro Crater's forested areas also harbor leopards.

Elephant

Tarangire National Park has Tanzania's largest elephant herds, with over 3,000 individuals. The park's baobab trees provide stunning backdrops for elephant photography.

Buffalo

Common throughout Tanzania's northern circuit parks. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater have large herds. Buffalo are often found near water sources.

Rhino

Black rhinos are critically endangered. Ngorongoro Crater has a small but stable population. Conservation efforts have helped protect these magnificent animals.
